Fashionable Ideas

Several weeks ago, I read a tweet that said "A true college drop-out would drop-out from anything makes them feel restricted".

The idea of dropping out has somehow become cool because it signals risk-taking.

"I'm gonna drop out of college and still do fine. I deserve credit for that"

How often do we make decisions because they're trendy? Conformity traps us all but when it comes to big decisions in life, I believe we can try to give ourselves time to reflect.

If you read On Repetition, the principle of repetition can be helpful in cultivating any sort of behavioural change that is possible. Creating a loop of behaviour of being extra careful should make it easier over time.

It's not just about being a college drop-out. It's the clarity of what you want and moving away from anything that restricts you from achieving it. The idea of dropping out is that a student will be able to utilize the same time they'd spend in their classe. Furthermore, it provides them a liberty to work on whatever they want to do.

The goal of dropping out is to attain that freedom and dropping out just becomes one method of that.

Methods don't always work - refer to Mental Models but Why?. We look for methods when we're unsure of our own capability of choosing a way. It's about having an underlying purpose and your values defined so you can take an independent decision and not go with what is trending.
